FIGHTING HUNGER IN BOLIVIA

One out of every 10 children in Bolivia dies before his or her fifth

birthday. In addition, approximately 28 percent of those who live

have had their growth permanently stunted by poor nutrition. With

help from The Hunger Site, WFP is providing 50,000 of Bolivia's

poorest children with the food necessary for their healthy growth.

To date, donations from The Hunger Site have provided 360 metric tons

of wheat flour used to make breakfast, lunch, and snacks for nursery-

school aged children in the poorest areas of the country.

JUNE CHALLENGE UPDATE

We did it! Thanks to you, we raised an additional 504,870 cups of

food in our June Challenge. That's 4,870 cups over our goal! This extra

food will help feed people in emergency situations as well as provide

food for development projects aimed at enabling people to feed

themselves. Thanks for your commitment to end hunger!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO THE HUNGER SITE!
On June 1st The Hunger Site celebrates its first birthday. In just 12
months, caring individuals like you have clicked to donate free food
more than 70 million times -- enough to deliver more than 150 million
cups of food to the hungry. Thank you!

HOW DOES YOUR DONATION GET TO THE HUNGRY?
The World Food Program gets food quickly to the most difficult places
on earth. Whenever possible, WFP uses The Hunger Site donations to
buy food from local farmers. It works with groups such as village
women's associations and other non-profits to distribute food.

In addition, every day WFP has 20 aircraft in the sky, 40 ships at
sea, and hundreds of trucks, trains, barges and even elephants
carrying food to those in need. WFP builds warehouses, bridges, roads
and airport runways, and has even rehabilitated entire railways and
ocean ports, doing whatever it takes to get food to the hungry.

DROUGHT IN SOUTH ASIA THREATENS MILLIONS
Thirty million people in India, Pakistan and Afghanistan are living
on the edge of disaster. Drought is killing their cattle and crops,
causing many to begin moving in search of food and water. The World
Food Programme is providing food to the poorest people, many of them
women and children. In India, for example, WFP is working with
drought-afflicted communities by rebuilding systems to collect and
store precious rainwater and providing food to people working on this
project. In this way, both long-term and short-term needs are met.

WHAT KIND OF FOOD DOES MY DONATION BUY?
We get this question a lot! A donation via The Hunger Site enables
WFP to buy a cup or more of cereal (wheat, rice or maize) -- a basic
staple for energy and nutrition. The World Food Programme buys and
ships food in bulk quantities to feed as many people as possible. A
typical 'food basket' includes cereals, as well as pulses (beans or
lentils), oil, and perhaps salt or sugar. These basic foods ensure
that hungry people get the nutrition to lead active, healthy lives.

Children and breastfeeding or pregnant mothers sometimes need a
little extra. So WFP provides 'blended foods', which are a
combination of cereals fortified with important vitamins, minerals
and other nutrients. These dry products are mixed with water, a
little sugar and salt, and then served as drinks, porridge, biscuits
or pancakes, depending on the local custom.
